What Byewall does
Byewall helps users understand what blocked or difficult pages are about. It does not bypass, remove, or circumvent access controls.
Data we process
- Article URLs submitted by users for analysis.
- For extension-triggered analysis, the active tab URL selected by the user when they click the extension.
- Limited request metadata for reliability and abuse prevention (for example, IP and user agent).
- A durable usage record containing service source, article domain, timing, outcome, and provider usage such as AI token and search-credit totals.
- Optional user feedback votes on summaries/links.
Public activity
The homepage may show activity from the last 72 hours grouped by publication domain. It does not publish the submitted article URL, headline, or a country attached to an individual search. Country names appear only as section-level aggregates after a minimum activity threshold is met.
Browser extension behavior
- The extension runs on user action: when clicked, it captures the active tab URL and opens byewall.app to analyze that page.
- The extension does not run automatic all-sites background scanning.
- The extension does not store persistent paywall-detection state in extension storage.
How we use data
- To generate article summaries and related context.
- To improve service performance (for example, caching and rate limiting).
- To monitor reliability and prevent abuse.
Data sharing
We do not sell personal data. We may share limited request data with infrastructure and AI/search providers only as needed to operate the service.
Retention
Detailed durable usage records are retained for up to 90 days. They do not contain raw visitor IP addresses or full submitted URLs: Byewall stores secret-keyed pseudonymous identifiers and article domains instead. Cached summaries and short-lived operational analytics follow separate expiration periods according to service configuration. Aggregate provider cost records may be kept longer for accounting and service planning.
